15 the best spanish cheeses

Spain may be more famous internationally for its jamon than for its cheese, but there is a great and delicious selection of cheeses in Spain.

In fact, Spain is giving its northern neighbor, France, a run for their money in the fromage department with Spanish cheeses that won three “Oscars” in the best cheese awards in the world in 2018 compared to just two from France.

The title of “best cheese in the world” this year passed to a Gouda called Fanaost, but three Spanish cheeses were chosen among the 16 best cheeses in the world from a selection of more than 3,400 different cheeses from 41 countries.

Here are the best cheeses as determined by the experts:

Maxorata, a mature medium with paprika, or semi-ripened with paprika was named the 11th best cheese (59 points) in the world. This goat cheese is created by the livestock cooperative in Puerto del Rosario on the Canary Island of Fuerteventura.

La Reserva from The Entrepinares Dairy  based in Valladolid, a Spanish cheese commonly found on supermarket shelves in Mercadona, earned 56 points and a joint place of 12. It costs only € 10.20 per kilo, an award-winning cheese that we can afford everyday.

Madurat, a cheese created by Formatges Mas El Garet in Tona, a hill town near Barcelona, won 54 points and the 14th place.

But that is not all. Another 12 Spanish cheeses were named among the 80 best cheeses in the world.
